A microscopic exam of urine for cells, crystals, and casts. Usually a follow-up rather than a first test.
Creatinine and the eGFR calculated from it estimate how well the kidneys filter. BUN, electrolytes, and minerals fill in the picture, and urine microalbumin catches early kidney stress before blood numbers move.
High blood pressure, diabetes, and some medicines are the usual reasons to check. A renal function panel gathers the blood numbers in one draw; urinalysis and microalbumin add the urine side.
Reading your result
Hydration changes concentration, exercise can add protein or blood, menstruation adds blood, and diet shifts acidity. Infection adds white cells and nitrites; uncontrolled diabetes adds sugar.
Unexpected findings are often repeated on a fresh, midstream sample or followed with a culture. A first-morning sample is the most concentrated, and a very dilute sample can hide protein or blood that a second sample would show.
