About this test
The standard HIV screen. It looks for both the virus and antibodies to it, so it turns positive earlier than antibody-only tests. Positives get automatic follow-up testing.
Many common infections cause no symptoms, so screening after a new partner or an exposure is routine. Blood tests cover HIV, syphilis, hepatitis, and herpes; a urine sample covers chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trich.
Timing matters: each infection takes time after an exposure to show on a test, and the window differs by infection, so a clinician may note when a repeat makes sense.
Reading your result
The result changes only with infection, but timing matters: soon after an exposure the test can be negative before the virus is measurable. Preventive medicines (PrEP or PEP) can also delay when it shows.
A positive that has been retested is stable and does not change with day-to-day factors. A negative taken too soon after an exposure can be too early, and a new exposure starts the clock again, which is why routine screening is repeated over time.
